Driving a UK-registered car in Andorra: what Andorran registration involves, what it costs, and what to do instead

A UK car in Andorra must be deregistered in the UK, approved and pass a control ITV before it gets Andorran plates. What that involves and the alternative.

How long can I keep it on UK plates?

Andorra's official procedure for registering a used car on foreign plates doesn't publish a deadline for new residents, but it sets out what has to happen first: the car is deregistered in its country of origin and inspected at a control ITV in Andorra. Relocation advisers in Andorra say residents are expected to register a foreign car within six months of becoming resident. We could not confirm that six-month figure in official sources, so check with the vehicle registry.

Can a right-hand-drive car be registered?

Andorra drives on the right. Relocation advisers report that imported used cars must be left-hand drive and no more than about six years old, with a recent Euro emissions class. The official registration procedure doesn't say so and we could not confirm it, so ask the vehicle registry before you spend money on a right-hand-drive car. Either way, right-hand drive sells for less in Andorra's small market.

What registering it involves

  1. Deregister the car in the UK by telling the DVLA it has been permanently exported.
  2. Approval: the car's CoC or, for a car built outside the EU without an EU CoC, an individual Andorran approval (HIA) based on a technical service's report.
  3. A control ITV at the Andorran test centre, with the UK registration document and a mileage report.
  4. Andorran motor insurance, then first registration with the vehicle registry and plates from the Andorran automobile club.

What it costs

  • First registration: €250.
  • Control ITV for an imported used vehicle: €60.55 or €73.30 depending on the vehicle category, tax included.
  • Individual approval (HIA), if needed: €40, plus the technical service's report.
  • Plates from the automobile club (advisers quote from about €60) and Andorran insurance.

The alternative: sell it back to the UK

The usual alternative is to drive the car back to the UK and sell it there. Andorra la Vella to Calais is about 1,150 km through France: a long day and a half at the wheel, plus fuel, tolls, the Channel crossing, the journey back and then the job of selling the car. It only works while the MOT and UK insurance are valid. We collect it free from your address in Andorra, handle the export paperwork and pay you in pounds sterling (£) by bank transfer on collection day.

Common questions

Can I register a right-hand-drive UK car in Andorra?

Ask the vehicle registry first. Advisers in Andorra say imported used cars must be left-hand drive and fairly new; the official procedure doesn't say so, and we could not confirm it. If yours can be registered, expect the CoC or an individual approval, the control ITV and a lower resale price.

What if the MOT has expired?

Not a problem. We buy cars with an expired MOT, no UK tax or a SORN, and collect them by transporter, so the car doesn't need to be driven.
